Introduction to the park
Dawenkou Site is located on both banks of Dawen River at the southern foot of Mount Taishan Mountain in Tai'an City, between Weijiazhuang Village, Dawenkou Town, Daiyue District and Baotou Village, Ciyao Town, Ningyang County. The site covers an area of 39.1 hectares, about 6500-4000 years ago. It is the discovery and naming place of Dawenkou Culture, one of the birthplaces of ancient Chinese civilization, and an important part of Mount Taishan World Cultural and Natural Heritage. In 1982, it was announced as the second batch of national key cultural relics protection units. In 2021, it was selected as one of the "Top 100 Archaeological Discoveries of the Century". In 2025, it was included in the list of national archaeological site parks. The Dawenkou culture inherited the Beixin culture and initiated the Longshan culture, playing a key role in the construction of the Haidai culture system and having milestone significance in the history of Chinese archaeology.
Dawenkou National Archaeological Site Park, based on the positioning of "the highland of Haidai civilization and the source of Chinese ritual system", integrates the protection of Dawenkou site, archaeological research, exhibition and promotion, and ecological conservation. It is a window to showcase Dawenkou culture to the world. Plan and construct the "Five Zones, One Belt, and Three Nodes" functional areas. The "Five Zones" refer to the site exhibition area, museum exhibition area, park service area, Dawenkou Ancient Town area, and agricultural ecological tourism experience area. The "One Belt" refers to the Dawenkou Riverside Landscape Belt. The "Three Nodes" refer to the Dawenkou Site Museum, house excavation area exhibition shed, and Dawenkou Ancient Stone Bridge.
The Dawenkou Site Museum, with the theme of "Dawn of Hai Dai", is divided into four chapters: Discovering Dawenkou, Exploring Dawenkou, Guarding Dawenkou, and Looking Up at Dawenkou. Through cultural relics, graphics, scene restoration, multimedia and other methods, it showcases the historical art and value of Dawenkou culture. The site itself adopts various forms such as themed sculptures, house restoration, simulated scenes, and immersive experiences, vividly depicting the production, life, and social customs of the ancestors during the Dawenkou culture period, and explaining the important significance of the Dawenkou site in the origin of Chinese civilization.
