The Development History of 01 Museum
The term 'museum' comes from the Greek word 'mouseion', which originally meant a temple dedicated to nine Muse goddesses responsible for art and science. In the early days, museums were used to hold funeral commemorative ceremonies and competitions for members of literary societies. Later, Mouseion was associated with literary activities, and records show that Mouseion was once used as a research and teaching venue.
Until the Renaissance, museums were understood by their creators as a microcosm of distant countries and past times in the vast world. At the same time, the royal family, landowning nobles, and churches collect precious paintings and statues and display them as decorations. With the rise of egalitarian ideology, museums have gradually begun to open up to the public and have been given the role of educating the public.
Nowadays, there are thousands of museums around the world, which have become important places for the public to learn about history and culture from ancient and modern times, both in China and abroad.
02 Birth of International Museum Day
International Museum Day (IMD) was born in 1977. In the same year, the General Conference of the International Council of Museums held in Moscow, Russia, passed a resolution: set up an annual event, which "aims to further unify the creative aspirations and efforts of museums, and attract the attention of the world public to its activities." Since then, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) has announced to the world that May 18 of each year is International Museum Day, It aims to convey that museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enriching culture, and developing mutual understanding, cooperation, and peace among people.
This annual event attracted more and more museums to participate in it, so the International Association of Museums announced the first theme of International Museum Day, "Museums and Environment", in 1992. Then every International Museum Day has a special theme. In 1997, the first poster of International Museum Day was released.
The Chinese Museum Society officially joined the International Museum Association in 1983 and established the China National Committee of the International Museum Association. On May 18th every year, various commemorative activities are held in various provinces and cities across the country.
